S and I have been to Mama Brown with friends for more times than I’d like to admit. Our first visit was for brunch and the rest were for their 2-for-1 Mains promo held Wednesdays. Mama Brown’s not super expensive, but it isn’t exactly the cheapest either. Their mains are ginormous and comes with fries and slaw, though, so availing of the promo makes dining there a lot more worth it. The promo does limit the selection, but we’re planning on trying their stuff some other time once we’re tired of their mains.
There are several chicken options under their mains and I have a feeling we’ve already tried all of them. Both the Kentucky Hot Brown Boy (NZ$26.50) and Chicken & Waffles (NZ$26.50) are delicious, but there are times when the chicken does come out a tad dry. It’s always a bit of a letdown when it happens. I personally like the Kentucky Hot Brown Boy better than the one with waffles, mainly because of the tomatoes and the melted cheese. NOM.
The Buffalo Chicken Wings (NZ$23.50) have always come out cooked just right and with an acceptable level of heat. These are perfect to share with another person. Would you really want to share, though?
For the times when none of us felt like eating poultry, we tried their Fish and Chips (NZ$26.50) and BBQ Pork Ribs (NZ$29.50). The fish was just alright and would’ve probably been made better if there was tartar sauce served on the side. The ribs, on the other hand, have consistently been the best item we’ve had from the mains by far. Since the only two remaining mains we haven’t tried are the nachos and the Halloumi salad, I have a feeling S will declare the ribs as the #1 item from the mains menu.
Mama Brown claims to have the best milkshakes in Welly and yes, we have to agree. They don’t just come big in size, but definitely also in taste! S and I always end up getting one of these sinful drinks to share whenever we visit, even if we’ve decided not to beforehand. Must resist next time. My personal favorite is the Old Fashioned Chocolate (NZ$8.90), but the Oreo and Chocolate Fudge Brownie versions are superb too. C said the KitKat one is a must-try as well! There are a lot of flavors to choose from, including a special limited edition milkshake up on the board. You can even try their dirty version, which includes a bit of alcohol in the milkshake.
Although the food can sometimes be a hit-or-miss, we still highly recommend dropping by Mama Brown even if it’s just for the milkshakes. Go early as this place becomes packed really tight during lunch hours. If you can, grab a table by the couch and the old airline seats. Those are more spacious and comfortable!
